Here’s my favorite piece of Glenn Beck’s half-cocked argument.

I didn’t know about the secret white person code language, but I’m hoping there’s a secret handshake too.

I’d like to suggest to Glenn Beck that he actually do some reading about this thing called “semantics” and understand that yes, in fact, there is a tendency to use secret codes in order to avoid stating the obvious. You’re so scared someone is going to figure out that you have a deep ceded hatred of people for the color of their skin, you won’t say what is really on your mind.

Glenn, it would be nice to hear you simply call Senator Obama “the ‘n’ word” and get it over with. Anyone reading this column from you already knows you want to. Just do it and end your career for us all, nice and clean.

If Palin is going to say this, it is now perfectly legitimate to point out that she repeatedly courted a secessionist group founded by someone who openly professed hatred of the American government, cursed our flag, and wanted to secede from the Union. Sarah’s husband, Todd Palin, was a member of this group, which continues to venerate that founder to this day, for years.

As you already know, the group is the Alaska Independence Party, which sees as its ultimate goal seceding from the union. Todd was a member, with a brief exception, from 1995 until 2002, according to the Division of Elections in Alaska.

And though Sarah Palin herself was apparently not a member of this group, there’s no doubt that she repeatedly courted this secessionist organization over the years. In 1994, Palin attended the group’s annual convention, according to witnesses who spoke to ABC News’ Jake Tapper. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group’s 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.

I would ask that before the McCain-Palin campaign begin pointing fingers at an individual who casually supported Barack Obama on his political rise, they should go ahead and embrace their connections to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Here are two people whom it could be argued have mishandled the powers vested in them by the people who elected them, using those powers to commit acts of white-collar terrorism against their own people for the purposes of shuffling monetary controls and power to themselves (and to their cronies and allies) — individuals and corporations whose actions have crippled our country’s economic infrastructure and cost people their life savings more than once — remember Enron?

You can’t put Obama in bed with a bad guy and at the same time pretend you’re not in bed with the two baddest guys of them all.

Let’s talk about the issues. People who have nothing to add to the discussion about issues talk badly about other people to distract the American people from what matters to us. “Swift Boating” must end now.

8:16 Obama says he suspended requesting earmarks until the system cleaned up. McCain is asking for 300 billion dollars in tax cuts to some of the wealthiest corporations in America. Obama wants to grow the economy “from the bottom up”.

8:18 McCain says Obama suspended his requests “after running for President”. Boy McCain is working overtime with the cliches. McCain claims Obama is asking for $800 billion in new spending.

8:19 Obama says he’s going to close corporate loopholes to pay for his programs which is where the $800 billion is going to come from.

8:20 McCain says businesses pay 35% tax, Ireland pays 11%. He wants to cut the business tax so we’re on par with countries where jobs are being shipped. “Senator Obama is a recent convert after asking for $932 million dollars of pork barrell projects.”

8:22 Obama: 95% of Americans get a tax cut. Business taxes on paper are high in this country. But the loopholes are so heavy that businesses pay the lowest business taxes in the world thanks to loopholes.

He says McCain intends to tax health benefits. If you lose your health care, you have to go out on the market and buy it.

8:23 McCain talks about the energy bill with tax breaks for oil companies, Obama voted for, McCain voted against. Trying to paint himself as the fiscal conservative. Two tax brackets, two dividends.

McCain is such a douche. He’s laughing at Obama. That doesn’t win him any points.

People: what year are we living in?

If you’re going to introduce race into the +/- for this Presidential race, please remember: we have, in elections around the country for many years, elected mayors, senators and governors who are of varying races, nationalities and skin tones all across this country.

If what’s keeping you from voting for the candidate that you want is the color of their skin and not the content of their character, regardless of what that skin tone is, your vote in this election is probably not required. If you can’t vote for the candidate you want because you’re that prejudiced, then stay home. No matter who is elected, you will always have no voice, because you can’t hear anyone else’s besides your own.

If you can see past whatever prejudice you have, please remember this: you not voting for your conscience means that someone else who is voting based primarily on their racial prejudice will control the future of your country.

And like it or not, the terrorists will have really won then.

The invasion of the Governor’s privacy has raised a number of questions about the privacy & security of public email providers, furthering concern and speculation that such use by government officials to conduct official government business would fall outside the realms of disclosure.

Months ago, Governor Palin admitted openly to routinely having used public email, even prided herself on the choice. Now that the email has been compromised, people on all sides were given a clear, if momentary, glimpse into what amounts to, essentially, very little: nothing untoward was revealed whatsoever. Quite the contrary: it bolstered confidences of people who supported Governor Palin, both sympathetically and contextually, for using public email in her practice as governor of Alaska.

Meanwhile, the CIA and the FBI appear to have become directly involved in tracking down the people (or persons) who infiltrated the governor’s privacy, a completely appropriate action in light of who, and what, was being tampered with. Blame has been placed on someone who, in the eyes of some, must clearly be an Obama supporter — someone who wanted to blow the whistle on some form of corruption. It has stimulated response from both Republicans and Democrats, denouncing the fiendish motivations behind such actions, creating increased finger-pointing by people who were already looking for reasons to chastise one side or the other.

The media has wondered, publicly, how such an attack could have occurred. But in the media’s coverage of this debacle, a series of critical reasoning flaws and motives have been overlooked.

Chief among these logic problems, to this writer, seems simple: what if it was merely an “inside job” by the McCain camp meant to discredit Obama supporters and create a firestorm of controversy?

Readers of this piece may not be familiar with the website 4chan and “Anonymous”, the default name given to anyone who posts on the 4chan website if they choose not to include a name. The “Anonymous” moniker was connected to controversy earlier this year in a rallied effort to discredit the Church of Scientology, known as “Project Chanology”. An inflammatory video was posted to YouTube, one which features Tom Cruise in the midst of a scientology presentation. Various protests and denial-of-service atacks were organized against the Church of Scientology in extensive ambiguity by the disconnected minions of both the project and of 4chan.

The philosophy behind this anonymity and ambiguity is culled from a character called V, the central character in the comic book and subsequent film V for Vendetta. V is known to be an “anarchist revolutionary dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask” who begins an “elaborate, violent and theatrical campaign to bring down the government”. Through association, the 4chan version of “Anonymous” has attempted to adopt the theology and philosophy of V, representing both everyman and no man at the same time. By being everywhere and nowhere at the same time, it is believed, the ability to find and conquer one’s target is always close at hand.

It is not known how many members there are of the 4chan community — no concrete numbers save those of their Alexa ranking (1,039 out of all the internet as of this writing). It is not known, even, who frequents the website itself. What is known by those who have visited the site’s adult section (or /b/), by chance or otherwise, is their insistence on disconnecting themselves from the content presented by participants. The disclaimer states the obvious: “The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.”

The content warrants such a disclaimer: while the site is well-known as a way to quickly spread internet meme’s (such as Tay Zonday’s now-notorious “Chocolate Rain”), the site is perhaps better known as a catch-all for the posting of disgusting pictures (including mutilations, cutting, various body piercings, suicide photos and other atrocities), hideous imagery (people ingesting their own and each others feces for example) and (it is widely reported) even child pornography, or “CP”. It would appear to the untrained visitor that it is a haunt for the internet society’s lowest common denominators. However, a closer look will reveal simply this: a bunch of bored kids seeking any form of shock value.

What better group of people, it would seem, to take an inside job to and utilize for your own means — those with a reputation for illegitimate, shady behavior and the trafficking of illegal art, a group who have already been connected to protests and whose inherited kinship with anarchist behavior is widely known?

The media has purposefully overlooked what 4chan is and what it contains precisely because they do not want to promote the promoters. But is it not possible, in the grand scheme of things, that someone in the McCain/Palin camp said to themselves, “Hey, here’s an idea: we’ll clean up the governor’s inbox to make sure there’s nothing incriminating, we’ll ‘leak’ the password and a series of photos proving that Governor Palin’s account was hacked using 4chan, and create a shit storm. The content of the leak will prove what we’ve been saying all along, discrediting pundits who claim that the Governor is using public email to conduct important government business and bring further attention to this hotbed of anarchistic activity on the internet?”

While far from being “The Perfect Storm”, an investigation may lead directly to someone within Palin’s own camp, a trusted confidant or, perhaps, someone with a bone to pick. Only time will tell. However, as much as I would like to believe that this is all a grand scheme to discredit Governor Palin, it only seems to me, at this point, like a desperate attempt to sweep together soundbites that paint the Governor in a more palatable light. In light of recent allegations of corruption by the Governor and attempts to cover up that corruption by the McCain camp, what better time to unleash a simple, yet powerful, public relations tool?

The 2008 Presidential election was never going to be simple. For a time, it seemed that the tide was moving in one specific direction; today, it is turning into a hotly-contested political contest fueled by innuendo and distortions the likes of which the American people have not seen in many years.

On the left, Barack Obama, the presumptive favorite of the American people (based on their feeling about the issues affecting them) has been solid and steady about his promise to bring change and reform to Washington since proclaiming his run for the presidency in February of 2007. There is Senator Joe Biden, one of the lowest-level income earners in both public service and Congress, whose very direct grassroots style and deep connection to the common people of America have earned him immense respect and the Democratic vice-presidential nod.

On the right, the self-proclaimed “mavericks” whose messages represent the policies which we have lived with for the past eight years. The right’s two personalities, John McCain and his running mate Governor Sarah Palin, have proven effective in their quest to transform the campaign messages of the left and make them their own, repackaging the notions of “change” and “progress” by distancing themselves from the current White House and introducing Sarah Palin, a virtual ringer, into the contest for the White House. The process has been effective: the Republicans were able to stop the bleeding using Palin’s limitless charm as a security blanket for a race which seemed lost to them just weeks ago.

Obama has, for his part, handled matters with kid gloves up to this point. It’s not because of his unwillingness to fight but out of a genuine fear of being caught in the “catch-22″ of being mislabeled by undecided voters in the short run to election day. Obama has run a positive campaign and one which has been based on the issues. He has proven himself a remarkable public speaker, a man whose genuine concern for the welfare of our country comes across as honest rather than pious. He is a man of great intelligence and forethought, one who speaks with a no-nonsense ease about what he believes in and never shies away from answering tough questions.

However, in recent days, McCain’s organizers have been circling the wagons, unleashing a smear campaign fueled by half-truths and distortions, both of their own record and that of Senator Obama. In the PR wars, McCain has pulled out all the stops as he sprints for the White House, armed with the fuel of young Governor Sarah Palin, a dynamic mother of five whose far-right conservative views, glamorous appeal and friendly demeanor seem to set people at ease in small town America. Both Senator McCain and Governor Palin have dominated the headlines this week, both for what they are saying and what they are not.

The fear of the Democratic party is being realized as it was in 2000: people see Sarah Palin and they want to get to know her, relate to her motherly instincts and, honestly, they want to be her buddy. This has created a strong appeal by the Republican ticket to the lowest common denominators among voters, an edging factor which gave George Bush a boost in the previous two Presidential election cycles. It’s a similar scenario to what we saw with Barack Obama just a few weeks ago: people beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel, hearing a voice that comforted them and gave them pause.

But people need to wake up and come to realize that Sarah Palin is not running for President, that she is only the vice-presidential candidate and appears, to the untrained eye, to be an only mildly successful parrot for the talking points and ideas of her party, evidenced by her first full-length interview with ABC’s Charles Gibson this week.

While the attacks continue, Obama appears to finally be ready to throw some jabs of his own, that the gloves appear to be ready to come off. No longer willing to take the half-truths and distortions illuminated by the McCain camp, Obama has, in the last 48 hours, taken McCain directly to task, telling the McCain camp that “If you don’t stop telling lies about me, I’m going to have to start telling the truth about you.” Obama has approved his first negative campaign ad, repeating his message from the convention that McCain is “out of touch” because he “doesn’t even know how to use a computer” (a statement which was later disproved and an argument which Obama is likely to take heat from). The Obama camp struck an even more heavy-handed chord, saying that McCain would “rather lose his integrity than lose the race”.

When we look at the course of the mudslinging battle that has gone on, it’s easy to see why the Obama camp is willing to step up their game & take their own set of low-blows. If people from the lowest common denominator are going to respect Obama, they must see him as willing to step in the ring when attacked, no matter who the opponent nor which ring it is. Though by his nature Obama has portrayed himself as a noble statesman with a powerful approach to the issues, he seems to have been forced to move down to the level of the McCain camp in order to dismiss any notion that he is backing down from a fight.

The McCain camp, one which is supposed to be ahead in the polls, has behaved more like a wounded creature with a trick up their sleeve. The McCain/Palin ticket, at its basest level, should be seen as nothing more than an effective PR stunt by the right meant to confuse voters and frustrate opponents.

Once the dust settles, pundits agree, and both sides are able to get voters focused back on the issues of the campaign, Obama stands a much greater chance of delivering the coup d’grace to the Republicans that he has continually sought. The Republicans, while certainly well-meaning when it comes to their agenda, seek to run their campaign on personalities instead of issues. It is what secured them the White House in 2000, and they know that their machine is working with Sarah Palin as the focus. Meanwhile, the Democrats are trying their best to turn the tide of public attention back towards the difficulties we as Americans face while standing their ground and fighting back in the face of bitter and increasingly inaccurate personal attacks.

But if I could reach Senator Obama now, I would ask him not to back down from the fight, to unleash tough language where it is necessary, and to never back down from this fight at any level. If I could reach Senator McCain, I would ask him to quit pandering to the whims of his base, knowing that if he really is the maverick he claims to be, he most certainly should not give in to making personal attacks when he knows that all it will do is bring shame to the Republican party, as his predecessor has done, should he take the election.
